Does life sometimes feel like you’re chasing after a rainbow?
When you’re feeling stuck, or when your progress towards your goals hasn’t been as fast as you’d like, maybe you are you busy looking for success everywhere except the one place you can truly find it.
Success is not found in the environment around us, or the circumstances we find ourselves in. It can be found only within ourselves.
The only difference between the managing director in a company and the maid in the same company is their knowledge. The director knows something the maid doesn’t. That is why he earns a hundred times more than she does.
It is what you know that will bring you success. It’s what you don’t know that will cause you to fail. Why then, do some of us get it so wrong? For example many people look for promotions without acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge we need to be promoted.
Many business people are struggling because they just won’t take the time to learn about accounting, marketing and all that goes with doing business. That’s like trying to drive a car without first putting in the fuel.
People are sometimes strange creatures. We tend to want to what’s comfortable, and so many times invest in:
• Watching hours and hours of TV
• Play mind-numbing video games
• Education to get a college degree in something that doesn't help our career
• The Stock Market (Can be another form of gambling to a point!)
• Drinking to excess
• And more.
I'm not trying to knock any of these things, but the truth is if we spend a lot of time on these activities, they could really make our lives miserable and get us into a lot of financial problems and debt.
The simple fact is that if you are successful within – in your mind – you will be successful on the outside as well. It may seem too simple, but it is something we often forget when the pressures of life surround and overwhelm us. When it comes to making everyday choices it usually does not occur to us.
What does investing in ourselves look like?
Here is what I think…
“Investing in yourself means you take the time and money to better the things that will make you a happier, wiser and more financial independent person.”
Your mind is your greatest asset. Like any asset, it needs to be built up and improved continually. Abraham Lincoln said he didn’t “think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” He realized the basic truth that continuous improvement is necessary if one is to be truly successful.
So what skills could you develop with the investment of a little time or money? Could any of these improve your business, your life, or provide something you could offer to your community?
Some ways to invest in your skills are:
• Read a book that teaches you something new, especially in the personal development area.
• Attend a local course, investing in REAL education to help your business or career get to the next level.
• Start a home-based business.
• Associate yourself with positive people.
• Ask someone to mentor you.
• Exercise and take care of your body.
• Schedule regular time to practice.
Become addicted to constant and never-ending improvement and knowledge. With time, you will find the steps are easier and easier to do, and one day you will wake up and realize it's just your way of life and you won't even believe that you used to do some of the “Bad Investing” in your old life! You will inevitably become the person that you desire to be. Then you will no longer have to chase after success. Success will follow you. Your mind will become magnetized to attract success.
So take the next step and get starting with positive investment in yourself. Pick one of the areas I mentioned and start today!
